Hoop the Vote!

“Jones to host event to drive points on basketball court and points about voting privileges”

Jacksonville, FL— July 10, 2008 — JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – City of Jacksonville Councilwoman Mia Jones and candidate for State Representative – District 14 is “slam-dunking” her efforts for voter education by hosting a  “Hoop to Vote” basketball/voter’s registration event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 26th at William M. Raines High School, 3663 Raines Ave. While the event will undoubtedly appeal to area sports enthusiasts, “Hoop to Vote” is also designed to appeal to the Duval County residents, ages 18-35, which are not registered to vote.

“As I spend more and more time talking with my constituents, it becomes increasingly clear to me that people do not understand how the privilege of voting gives a voice to the issues that affect their lives and communities,” said Jones. “Voting is not just an ID card that we carry in our wallets; it’s our mouthpiece for change.”

Men and women, 18 years and older, are encouraged to register for the five-person “Hoop to Vote” basketball teams. Teams (men and women division), will participate in three on three basketball games during the drive. Each team member must pay a $25 registration fee by July 20th. There is no cost for admission. Residents throughout the community are encouraged to bring themselves and eligible non-registered voters to give voices of cheer for their favorite basketball team and their country.
